Les paroles et la musique s’inspirent d’un gospel écrit par le pasteur Charles Tindley en 1905 et enregistré en 1916.
Par la suite, cette chanson a été réécrite par The Staple Singers en 1955, puis par Sam Cooke et J.W. Alexander en 1960 pour l’ancien groupe de Cooke, The Soul Stirrers (avec Johnnie Taylor en chanteur lead).
La chanson de Ben E. King est la première version séculaire de ce morceau.
Cette chanson, après sa sortie, obtient un énorme succès en Amérique mais aussi dans les quatre autres continents (Asie, Europe, Océanie et Afrique).
Désormais devenue un classique, elle a été reprise de nombreuses fois, notamment par John Lennon, Marvin Gaye, Paul Anka, The Temptations,The Isley Brothers, Otis Redding The Kingsmen, U2, Bruce Springsteen, Vanessa Paradis en duo avec Willy DeVille, Adriano Celentano, Pennywise, Incubus, Albert Griffiths des Gladiators, 4 The Cause, Seal, Damien Saez, Enrique Iglesias etc.
Dalida a enregistré l’adaptation française, « Tu croiras », en 1963.
Cette chanson a aussi donné son titre à un film de 1986 : Stand by me – Compte sur moi, réalisé par Rob Reiner. La version originale de Ben E. King fut rééditée à cette occasion et fut de nouveau un succès planétaire sur les ondes.
En 2007, le chanteur américain Sean Kingston utilise un sample de « Stand By Me » pour son titre Beautiful Girls. Le projet musical Playing for change en produit une version interprétée par de nombreux artistes autour du monde.

You play a G7 but I found a G on several tabs on the net and the difference is not that big.
